Your Room Is A Mirror Of Your Mind: The Psychology Of Space |
From
ages we have been told by our elders to clean your house, to get your bedroom
straight. Some of us believed and followed without questioning or arguing
because we believed in their wisdom. While others refused to do so because for
them it meant going out of their very comfort zone or just some fragile ego.
However
old wisdom like Feng Shui and even modern Psychology says something more
profound about it. So if you are one of those who don’t believe in your elders
nudging you and take it as an act of bullying by your elders this article is
for you. It will open your eyes to how much wisdom our elders or ancestors
carried with them and how much ignorant we are with our fragile ego.
As
such their nudging was not to meant to bully you rather to help you protect
your mental and physical health. In short they cared for your well-being, they
loved you, they wanted to protect you, though they might not have been literate
like you. But still they carried wisdom which protected them and they wanted to
gift you.

| The Mess in your home is not random |
So
let’s see their wisdom or nudging through psychological and Feng Shui lens.
Feng Shui and many other cultures of the world like Indian Vaastu too believe
that everything is made up of energy. Those wise people just by looking around
your house could predict your psychology as well as your future. Wow, isn’t it
great! Just by looking around your
house.
When
I talked about psychology so yes psychology too has taken some wisdom from
these cultures. According to them it’s a clear map of where energy feels stuck
in your life. Whether it is Bedroom Clutter, Closet Chaos, Broken Items, Kitchen
Mess, Desk Disorder and Entryway pile-up. We will discuss each one now.
1. BEDROOM CLUTTER
![]() |
| Your bedroom represents your inner psyche. |
Your
bedroom represents your inner psyche. Cluttered bedroom indicates that you still
carry old worries, unfinished thoughts, and heavy emotions into each new day. You
don’t want to let go what is no longer serving you. You are still holding to
your grudges, pain and all those things which caused you pain and stress. As
such
BEDROOM CLUTTER=MENTAL CLUTTER.
2. OVERFLOWING CLOSET
![]() |
Overflowing
Closet represent past versions of ourselves that we have outgrown. |
In
present times majority of us have overflowing wardrobes. Even I do have. Do you
know what it means? It means:
OVERFLOWING CLOSET=OLD IDENTITIES.
We
all hold onto our clothes and items from past versions of ourselves that we
have outgrown. We want to hold on to the memories attached to them. Never want
to let go of them. As if losing them is like cutting the cord with our previous
self or like removing our so may beautiful memories from our own consciousness.
To some grown-ups it means like forgetting their very own existence. As if
their identity lies only in those pieces of jewelry or artifacts not in the
moments of joy we had together. Perhaps for them they are memory triggers and
they just want to be remembered not lost, never die.
For
me it is a reminder that I have to lose weight. Haaa but it never happens. They
inspire me only when I change my wardrobe seasonally. Rest of the time they are
target of stress reminding me that I have to lose weight and each time I
procrastinate. Haa
I
know if I have to heal I have to let go of what no longer matches who you are
becoming. Just by donating to someone who needs them. That is the reason why
all the cultures taught of donation just to make room for fresh energy.
3. BROKEN ITEMS
![]() |
Broken items in our home are like
unfinished chapters. |
Broken
items in our home are like unfinished chapters.
BROKEN ITEMS=UNFINISHED CHAPTERS.
These
are those things which sit unnoticed but quietly drain your momentum. They
never make you happy rather takes away your vital force. To take your charge
back or your energy back just fix it, replace it, or release it completely.
Free yourself from any stalled energy. Life is too short to hold all these
mess. So just let go.
4. MESSY DESK
![]() |
| Messy or cluttered desk meant scattered focus. |
I
just remember first thing our elders or teachers used to say when we opened too
many notebooks on our study table was “clean
up your desk first.” The reason was simple according to them messy or
cluttered desk meant scattered focus.
MESSY DESK=SCATTERED FOCUS.
When
you open too many projects or ideas, you open loops which pull your attention
in every direction. As a result, your focus or attention is marred. Pick just one
path and give it your full presence. Clear the surface to sharpen your mind.
And just watch how your attention and work improves.
5. NEGLECTED KITCHEN
![]() |
| Kitchen space shows how you care for your own nourishment and daily well-being. |
Next
place which is easily ignored in today’s times or by today’s generation is your
kitchen. I just remember that at my grannies’ places shoes were not allowed
even though they had gas stove or standing kitchen. Some of the relatives mocked
them or criticized them for being too religious or orthodox. But each time they
quietly said “with shoes you bring all
the germs into the kitchen. It is not
good for your health.” Rarely the people who mocked understood them
probably because of their own comfort or laziness. Whatever may be their reason
for ridiculing my grannies. But truth is:
NEGLECTED KITCHEN= SELF NEGLECT.
According
to Psychology Kitchen space shows how you care for your own nourishment and
daily well-being. If your kitchen is well maintained it means self-care and if
cluttered and disoriented it means vice versa. It means you lack self-love or
care and the individual who lacks them there is little chance s/he would love
or care about others too.
So
if your kitchen is messy just clean and organize it. Treat your body and home with
the respect they deserve. They are just extension of you.
6. BLOCKED ENTRYWAY
![]() |
| Blocked entryways are resistance to new opportunities. |
According
to Feng Shui and even Vaastu energy
cannot flow in easily when the entrance feels crowded or stuck. They say:
BLOCKED ENTRYWAY=RESISTANCE TO NEW OPPORTUNITIES.
In
psychology it means blockages. Whether from Feng Shui or Vaastu or just from
psychological lens you see blocked entryways are resistance to new
opportunities. Clear the path so fresh possibilities can arrive with ease.
So
you see how much wise our grandparents/ancestors were. We never realized it
till we were shown the philosophy behind it. Thanks to them and you all for
your patience.
